About KIRK & SWEENEY
The name of this rum brand from the Dominican Republic echoes the period of Prohibition: in fact Kirk and Sweeney was the name of a wooden schooner which was known at that time for the smuggling of rum between the Caribbean and the United States.
Before entering the territorial waters of the United States, the schooner dropped anchor and sold the rum to the small boats that lined up alongside it. Faster and more maneuverable than coast guard boats, they transported the rum to shore without being worried. As other boats also began trafficking in rum, the route they took was then called the “Rum Line”. Likewise, the place where they anchored off the coast of the USA was called “Rum Row”.
