While the country has historically been a sugar cane producer, with the presence of many endemic varieties, the distillation of sugar-cane-based spirits has never been very developed and ocal producers very often prefer to turn to molasses.

However, there are exceptions and distilleries producing pure cane juice rum are beginning to become internationally known and are gaining a solid reputation.
