Mexico is one of the world's largest sugar cane-producing countries. For a very long, rum production remained something done by a multitude of very small, craft distilleries which produced what is called locally "Aguardiente" aimled a the local market. A few large distilleries appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, including two Bacardi factories in the 1930s.
