Cuba

The largest island in the West Indies began its rise in the production of Rums in the 18th century thanks to the brief British occupation (1754–1763) but especially from the American and Haitian revolutions, so much so that at the end of the 19th century Cuba became the second largest producer of Rhum after Martinique. The light rums produced on the island were a real success, boosted with the American prohibition (1920-1933), which drained waves of thirsty tourists to Havana. After 1959, date of the Castro revolution, the government nationalized the production apparatus, which is still partly in the hands of the state today.
