Île de Madère

Only country outside France to benefit from the "Rhum Agricole" IG, the island of Madeira, more famous for its sweet wines than for its rums, has been growing sugar cane since the 16th century. Its geographical location allowed it to be one of the first sugar and rum archipelagos established in the Atlantic on the road to the Americas. Many distilleries are still active on the island, the most important being Engenhos do Norte, which supplies most of the independent bottlers.
