The origins of Abuelo Rum date back to 1908. José Varela Blanco, a young Spanish immigrant, founded Ingenio San Isidro in the town of Pesé, the first sugar factory in the young Republic of Panama.
In 1936, he was joined by 3 of his sons, José Manuel, Plinio and Julio. It was at this time that the sugar refinery was transformed into a distillery. They notably produce Seco Herrerano Rum. A pure cane juice rum that is still the local market leader to this day.
A more modern facility was built not far from the original home in 1976. This is the Don José distillery, which is today the origin of Abuelo Rums. Today it produces nearly 90% of national production and employs more than 200 people.
