Founded in 1845 by William Hinton, the distillery which still bears his name today was for almost a century the main producer of Rhum Agricole on the island of Madeira.

In 1920, the distillery processed more than 600 tons of sugar cane per day. But the various sugar crises that shook the 20th century got the better of the local giant and the colossus turned out to have feet of clay.

The distillery closed its doors in 1986. 20 years later, the heirs of William Hinton restarted production and thus reopened a chapter in the history of rum production in Madeira.
