Île Maurice

Colonized by the French and then the English until its independence in 1968, the cultivation of sugar cane began in Mauritius in the 18th century. At that time, the geographical remoteness of Mauritius did not favour the export of rum which was mainly drank locally and in Madagascar. Until 2001, rums produced in Mauritius had a poor reputation, in fact, a law prohibited Rhum producers from using vesou (pure cane juice) in order to protect the local sugar industry. In recent years, a rise in quality has been driven, partly thanks to 3 new distilleries but also thanks to the independent bottlers.
