Guyana

As early as the 17th century, the first Dutch trading posts were already producing sugar cane spirits in Guyana (Ex-British colony, that will take this new name at the time of its independence in 1966). The Demerara region will make the reputation of the rums produced in Guyana, or production blends distillation in pot stills and columns to bring power and high quality. At the beginning of the 20th century, Guyana became the world's second largest exporter of Rhum, behind Martinique, and the Crown's largest supplier. The sugar crisis, the prohibition and the great depression of the 1930s will overcome this flourishing industry, and will lead to the disappearance of mythical distilleries, of which only one survives today: Diamond. Owned by Demerara Distillers Ltd (DLL), it has the particularity to own and operate the last wooden stills in the world : Port Mourant, Enmore and Versailles. The most internationally well-known brand of the DDL distillery is El Dorado.
